A Day at the Farm

May 12, 2016 By Jennifer

12 May

We recently went with Little Man’s class on a field trip to Underwood Family Farms. Located in Moorpark, CA about 40 miles Northwest of Los Angeles, Underwood is fun for the whole family. Underwood plays host to several festivals throughout the year, hosts Civil War reenactments and participates in 14 different Farmers’ Markets each week (2 in Ventura, Culver City, Thousand Oaks, Pasadena, South Pasadena, Calabasas, Camarillo, Brentwood, Encino, Hancock Park, Hollywood, Pacific Palisades and Santa Clarita). In addition to their fruit and vegetable stand, farm and animal center, they offer a CSA program, host birthday parties, offer weekly farm camps in the summer, allow you to pick your own produce and they have educational farm tours, among many other services.

Underwood is a popular filming location. We were there with the school in the fall for their pumpkin harvest and they were filming an episode of Life in Pieces in Underwood’s famous corn maze. Whenever you are visiting the farm, you have to keep your eyes peeled for celebrity sightings. Just Google “Celebrities at Underwood Family Farms” and you will see what I mean (Jennifer Garner, Gwen Stefani, January Jones, Rachel Bilson, David and Victoria Beckham, The Kardashians and many, many more).

We have been with the boys’ school several times and on this particular trip after a presentation about growing fruits and vegetables, we took a wagon ride, picked strawberries and picked an assortment of in-season vegetables. We had such a lovely day and I cannot recommend the farm enough. During the summer, we make it out to the farm at least once a week just to visit the fruit and vegetable stand and we usually attend a handful of festivals each year (not to mention our yearly pilgrimage to pick our Halloween pumpkins). I cannot recommend the farm highly enough and I believe that it is truly one of LA’s treasures.

Our haul for the day was quite impressive. Between the three of us we collected 12 beets with greens, 12 leaves of black kale, 12 leaves of green kale, 12 leaves of purple kale, 12 stalks of celery, 36 English peas and a large bowl of strawberries! We had quite a dinner feast!
