Well, we finished Downton Abbey: Season 2 last night. How is that possible since it is still currently airing on PBS? Well, it is out on DVD as of last week. My mom received it as a surprise gift last week, and we finished it this weekend. It just keeps getting better and better! I am already eagerly anticipating next season. I’ve recently discovered that Shirley MacLaine has joined the cast for season three! She will be playing Martha Levinson, the mother of Lady Grantham (Elizabeth McGovern). I’m looking forward to the possibility of a formidable showdown between MacLaine and Dame Maggie Smith, who plays the Dowager Countess and is (by far) my absolute favorite character on the show. How can you not love someone who effortlessly delivers lines like, “We can’t have him assassinated. I suppose,” “I do hope I’m interrupting something,” and “Don’t be defeatist, dear, it’s very middle class.” Pairing the outspoken Dowager Countess with her American in-law has the potential to be epic!
I cannot tell you how many people I have managed to get hooked on this show. I can’t take any of the credit really. The show more than speaks for itself.
Also in Downton Abbey news, there is a great new book out on the series. The World of Downton Abbeyis the perfect companion to the show with gorgeous photos and fascinating text. It explores the history of the era, the costume design, the sets, the production and the inspiration behind Downton. While the behind the scenes aspects are absolutely fascinating, you don’t need to be a film buff to enjoy this book. Anyone who is fascinated by the enchanting world of the Crowley family, those interested in the Edwardian and World War I periods, fashion aficionados and anglophiles in general will adore this lovely tome. Now if only someone would put together a book devoted solely to the show’s costumes….
